The
Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired offers a variety of programs and
services to the blind and visually impaired community of Kern County.
Following is a brief summary of these programs and services: ·
INDEPENDENT
LIVING SKILLS (ILS) - Small
classes under a qualified instructor offer training in ways of accomplishing the
activities of daily living with vision loss.
All ILS classes are by assignment only. ·
BRAILLE
INSTRUCTION
– Beginning, intermediate & advanced classes by appointment. ·
COMPUTER
TRAINING
- Tutorial sessions by appointment offer instruction in accessing
email, navigating the internet, creating a memo, scanning a document into the
computer, and balancing your checkbook. ·
ORIENTATION
& MOBILITY - Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist teaches by
appointment the proper white cane technique in the home, neighborhood, and
frequently visited businesses. Also
teaches street crossing and bus travel. ·
RECREATIONAL
PROGRAM - Socialization, arts & crafts, hot lunch, entertainment -
meets every Tuesday from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the Center.
Open to all who are blind or visually impaired. ·
SUPPORT
GROUP
- “Handy Hints” discussion group (Tuesdays - 1:00 – 2:00 pm) offers ideas
and suggestions for ways to minimize frustrations encountered on a daily basis
by those who have lost vision. ·
VISUAL
AIDS -
CBVI has many items available for sale: special
low vision handwriting aids, bump dots, talking clocks and watches, talking
calculators, low vision/braille cards and games, white canes, and more. ·
LOW
VISION CONSULTATIONS - By appointment only. Includes
demonstration of special lighting and magnification equipment. ·
CBVI
LIBRARY
- Large selection of books on tape and descriptive videos for loan. ·
RESOURCE
